On behalf of all of us at Woking & Sam Beare Hospice, our hearts and deepest condolences go out to Dame Deborah James’s children, husband, family and friends.
It has been a privilege and an honour to care for a truly inspirational and an exceptionally brave woman. She has not only raised a significant amount of money for a number of very worthy charities but Deborah has also put the spotlight on cancer. In particular she has removed some of the stigma and taboos around bowel cancer. This sort of awareness will have undoubtedly saved many lives.
And in the latter part of her illness Deborah has raised important awareness about end of life and hospice care, which the Hospice Sector is extremely grateful for. Dame Deborah leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
We are very proud of our team of dedicated and committed nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals. The standard of care given to Dame Deborah is that which we offer to all those under our care, together with the support services we provide to family members.
Hospice Care is a vital part of the healthcare system. Like our sister Hospices up and down the country [which there are approximately 700] we provide palliative and end of life care to patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses, as well as support for their carers and families. Our care is free of charge and it is holistic and is designed to cater for patients’ physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.
Woking & Sam Beare Hospice is the “Hub” for Palliative and End of Life Care for North West Surrey. Our care at the Hospice in Woking, Surrey, is delivered through our In-patient Unit and Wellbeing Centre. But what many are surprised to learn is that approximately 80% of our care is delivered in the homes of North West Surrey families.
We could not do what we do without the support of our North West Surrey clinical and social care partners and our many generous supporters and so we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you.
